The Wizard of Oz & Oz The Great and Powerful

It's marvelous having three little readers in the house.  Great readers, to boot!

A few weeks ago Bentley and I read a passage from the Wizard of Oz for a narration exercise.  As is often the case, after hearing a little bit of a good story Bentley was prompted to ask after more of the story!  So I loaded the Wizard of Oz onto the Kindle and away he went.  I've been thinking it's about time to try and draw Jake and Viva into some longer books so after seeing a commercial for the new Oz movie I was inspired by bribery!  Not that it was probably necessary...

I told the kids that whoever read the Wizard of Oz could go see the Oz the Great and Powerful movie with me.  Later I was informed, by Matt, that the movie is actually set BEFORE the Wizard of Oz book starts.  Ah well... I modified my bribe to include both a showing of the original Wizard of Oz movie AND this new one (because I wanted to see the new one!!).

So, of course, the kids were off and racing to read the book.  Bentley read it first, then Jake, and lastly Viva.  Viva started it the day before she headed home from Vegas and read about half of it.  The day before the movie she was on chapter 13 of 24 and I had to remind her that she, sadly, would be staying home if she didn't get busy.  She wasn't too concerned but did get down to reading - and polished the book off with impressive speed.

Sometimes I wonder if she really READS all the words, but quizzing seems to indicate that yes she does!  Bentley was also impressed with her speed and marveled to me that she reads faster than he does.  Viva overheard him and offered a good quip: "Don't you know?  These eyes were born for reading!"  I love how she uses language.  While reading the kids come across tons of expressions that I never use, and it's funny to hear the expressions, or odd variations on them, pop out of their mouths in conversation.

In conclusion?  On Thursday we enjoyed a matinee showing of the Oz movie with Daddy.  Good times (and good kids)!
