"If you're praying for snow, please stop!" This message has appeared on more than one church sign around town. The skiers, snowboarders, and dog sledders are not listening. It just keeps snowing and snowing. It's beautiful outside, but the roads are often treacherous.
I checked the official snow statistics and Anchorage has had over 103" of snow season-to-date (i.e. since July 1, 2011). This measurement is taken at the airport which is not the snowiest place in town. The Hillside often gets 50% more snow than the airport. We live in Lower Hillside. Yesterday the airport recorded 7" of snow. We had at least 12".
Anchorage's normal annual snowfall is 75". Usually by early February 50" of that 75" has fallen. Since we have 103"--with 1/3 of the snow season yet to go!--we could break the current record of 132.8" set in the winter of 1954-55. Surely we will at least make the top five score board--that only takes 110".
Let it snow!
