The Vegas Report: Days 1 & 2

The report, straight from Dad:

Monday
Monday, we managed to enjoy a trip to the playground and to play with the new soccer ball. We had to go to the store for a few forgotten necessities that morning.  Jake was excited that he was able to pick a new soccer ball and a spiderman toothbrush.  Our big outdoor activity was cleaning up a bunch of brush and trimmings (Jake loves to be a big helper, and he never gets to jump on big piles of leaves at home), while enjoying the warm sunshine.  In the evening, we went to downtown and saw the pirate show from the deck of the palazzo, took pictures at the waterfall of the Wynn, and saw Mystere at TI.  Jake says Mystere was cool.  He is still trying to figure out how they did their stunts.  We were extra lucky, too - the house manager reseated us from our nosebleed section to just four rows back from the front.  Very cool!  Waiting for the show to start:

Tuesday
Jake is having great difficulty figuring out how many days we've been here.  Sometimes he thinks we just got here, sometimes he thinks we've been here almost a week.  That makes it a little hard to talk to him about what we did/did not do, what to plan for, and to answer why we haven't already gone and done something.

For Tuesday, Jake got up and built a couple of Star Wars puzzles that grandpa Tim had left behind for him to do.  We went down to the park and played soccer for a while, then packed a lunch and headed over to the bookstore.  Jake's been bugging me to help him find new Lego early reader books, and maybe a book about space shuttles.  After spending more than an hour and a half at the bookstore (this boy loves books) we decided to escape the windstorm here in Las Vegas and see if there was cleaner air up at Mt Charleston/Kyle Canyon.  He had found four new early reader books, including one all about star wars. We enjoyed the drive up, though I was forced to answer questions the whole way about star wars plot lines and star wars characters from each of the movies.

We got up to the Kyle canyon area, and it was cold (to be expected, it's at 7600' elevation), where Jake got a quick pic of himself with smokey the bear - a must have picture for every true American vacation!

We decided it was too cold for a picnic so we drove around the area, checked out the snow on the mountains, and ate our lunch in the car. I was going to drive across to the other canyon, but about a mile into the drive, the weather turned a bit scary with extreme gusts coming off the mountain and a LOT of blowing snow.  I only needed to pass one sign that said chains and 4x4 may be necessary to decide that my little rental car didn't belong there.

We headed back to Grandpa Tim's, where the temp had dropped considerably.  We tried another brief game of soccer, but the wind and the chill were too much for us.  Jake worked on a new mega blocks project and watched some school house rock and Disney Fantasia while I made dinner.  I was a bit surprised, but he really liked the potatoes, pork chop, and sautéed vegetables I made.  He ate as much as me!  It was a busy day, so by 8:30 it was sleeper and reading time.  We started the star wars book, read a few Shel Silverstein poems, and read another chapter of the Bad Beginning book (Lemony Snickett).  Read while eating mint chocolate chip brownie ice cream!  Jake was in bed and asleep by 9:30... And he had worn me out so badly that I passed out on the couch about 20 minutes later!  It was a great day!
