Today is December 1st and that means we pull out the Christmas book collection and start reading one a day until Christmas. We don't yet have enough books to make it through to Christmas, so there will be repeats, but children love hearing the same stories over and over so that's not a problem.
Kara started this tradition two years ago. She read about it online and thought it sounded like a great Christmas tradition. You collect 24 different Christmas books. You wrap them up and put them under the tree. The children take turns choosing one to read each day. The only real problem with this tradition is the cost. 24 books cost quite a bit. And if you decide (like Kara did), to collect them in hard back, that means even more money. You could of course collect one or two books a year and that would be fine. Do what you can.
It's been fun helping Kara search for good Christmas books. We've collected titles such as Llama, Llama Holiday Drama, Olivia Helps with Christmas, Bear Stays up for Christmas, and Fancy Nancy: Splendiferous Christmas. These books are cute, but fluffy on content. Some titles with a good message that we found are Christmas Oranges, A Christmas Dress for Ellen, Apple Tree Christmas, and The Light of Christmas. Then there are the classics like How the Grinch Stole Christmas, The Night before Christmas, and A Christmas Carol. We relied on amazon.com reviewers to recommend Mr. Willowby's Christmas Tree, The Christmas Cookie Sprinkle Snitcher, and The Gingerbread Pirates. I found a book that contains the Christmas story straight from The Bible with beautiful cut-paper and watercolor illustrations.
Books are awesome!

Thanks for the titles you've collected. I have about 13 Christmas books I just pulled out, so now I want to finish up with the other 11 to do the open one a day tradition. What a great idea!
